Gluesnight 06 with Lord Daniel Finkelstein

When media met… politics

We were delighted to have the wonderful Lord Daniel Finkelstein as guest speaker at our Gluesnight with the theme: When Media Met Politics.

In her introduction, our CEO Pippa Glucklich noted that Danny's been an adviser to five out of the last seven Tory leaders (excluding Boris Johnson and Liz Truss).

For much of his time as a political insider Danny has also been a columnist for The Times newspaper.

We asked him to talk about Brand Britain – a theme that could lead us everywhere. From Shakespeare to Paul Smith. From Dickens to Dyson. From Top Gear to Twix. Of course, Brand Britain is all these things – and much more.

In 2024, Danny said that Brand Britain is about the things that contribute to making Britain successful as an island nation built on diversity.

He identified these as prosperity, liberty, security and stability and he articulated why and how these things have contributed to Britain since his parents arrived here. Both had horrifying experiences at the hands of two genocidal dictators of the twentieth century, as told in the remarkable book Hitler, Stalin, Mum & Dad.

In the Q&A, Stevie Spring, drawing on her leadership at the British Council and two international media companies, suggested that agencies could provide another pillar to Brand Britain. She asked: How can we use our industry’s soft power as a positive force to make Britain successful?

Danny replied that creativity is a defining characteristic of our country. And he believes we should harness it, and ever more strongly since Britain’s departure from the EU, to avoid messing up the things that are powerful and successful. He cited the BBC and (as a board member of Chelsea Football Club) the Premier League.

We couldn’t agree more because our Chair Sir John Hegarty also understands and actively promotes the art of creativity in business to effect change. ( https://lnkd.in/ekp-wNQW )

Thanks to Danny and to Newsworks who partnered with us on a memorable and fun Gluesnight.

If you’re interested in coming along to our next one and you’re not already on our list, why not drop us a line, here.

We’d absolutely love to hear from you.
